No Sunshine" is a songle by Bill Withers from his 1971 collection Just As
I Am, directed by Booker T. Jones. The released featured musicians Donald
"Duck" Dunn on bass guitar, Al Jackson, Jr.
on drums and Stephen
Stills on guitar. String arrangements were done by Booker T. Jones, and released
in Memphis by engineer Terry Manning. The track is in natural minor.
The music
was recorded as a song in September 1971, becoming a breakthrough hit for
Withers, reaching 6-th on the U.S. R&B Chart and 3-rd on the Billboard Hot
100 chart. Billboard ranked it as the 23-th single for 1971. The track also
appears on the original soundtrack album for When We Were Kings (1997), the
Academy Award-winning documentary on the Muhammad Ali/George Foreman "The
Rumble in the Jungle" fight.
